Hi Neighbor!
So many books, so little time, yet spring seems the perfect season to leap into a new book. Fortunately, our neighborhoods are filled with great choices for browsing, perusing, borrowing, or buying, ranging from independently owned stores, used books stores, big chains, and our own lavish library system. Let’s spring into action by investigating our options…
Indie book stores are in abundance on the Main Line. A personal favorite is Children’s Book World in Haverford, full of memories of frequenting the store when my boys were young. The staff is knowledgeable and eager to help, and the selection of books is broad ranging from items for infants through young adults.
Other local indie stores Main Point Books in Wayne and Narberth Bookshop provide a small town vibe while being current and well-stocked. Friendly, well-read staff are available to help customers find books and recommend staff favorites. The owners are also supportive of local authors, promoting books with appearances, launches, and signings.
Two other notable indie book stores Mavey Books in Ardmore and Moore Books in Havertown cultivate the love of reading for all ages while offering a sense of community. Mavey Books has their own in-house book clubs in various genres while Moore Books is happy to work with existing book clubs to search for new titles and offer discounts. Each store also has author readings and events.
A hidden gem, The Title Page is a used book store sitting on a side street next to Hope’s Cookies in Bryn Mawr. Full of antiquarian volumes and out-of-print books, this space is a collector’s dream. In a similar vein, Cathy’s Half Price Books in Havertown carries new and used books; patrons can schedule an appointment to trade in used books for store credit. While wandering these aisles, you may find a treasure such as an out of print title.
With the reappearance of Barnes and Noble on the Main Line, ironically where Borders dwelled decades ago, there is no reason NOT to purchase a new book. Check out the cavernous space where author signings are already being held.
Let’s not forget our public library systems where more than just books are offered. Each library provides programming for toddlers through seniors which often include author appearances and readings. Check online for the most up-to-date schedule. Visit soon, and don’t leave without a book!
