Lately I feel like I’m driving the posted speed limit during a nightmare version of the Indy 500. People are running red lights, ignoring stop signs, passing on two lane roads, tail gaiting and wildly exceeding speed limit signs on residential streets.
Maybe there aren’t enough police to monitor these behaviors, so circumventing the rules has no consequence. Maybe there’s just a general lack of respect for the rules intended to protect everyone. Maybe this is a role that self-driving cars will address. But what do we do now?
The number of accidents for 2025 is way up. Lower Merion reported 339 red light violations in 24 hours at one intersection alone, Lancaster and Haverford Station Roads. Red light enforcement cameras are being installed and that should help.
What’s driving this? Obviously, distractions from texts are contributing. As of June 5, bans on any handheld mobile device while driving, including talking on the phone, texting, using GPS, or browsing will be subject to a fine.
I can’t control this car race on the roads. I’m definitely looking both ways at intersections to allow time for red light runners. By steering clear of my car horn, I’m not contributing to sound pollution. But I’d like to shift out of my upset reaction.
I’m waving people in front of me when they signal. I’ll pull over and let tail gaiters pass. And I’m working to remain in neutral gear emotionally while expecting the unexpected.
Maybe these few responses will lessen a bit of aggravation on the road. I’m not planting seeds of road rage. I’m practicing road relief.

I could not agree more. I drive around all day in a car, clearly marked, student driver, and I experience all of this, even with a student driving.
I relate some of it to this country going downhill, everyone becoming more angry, short tempered, impatient unkind we are devolving
