Hi Neighbors!
Mondays are for Mahjong. As in, my friendly neighbors and I play mahjong on Mondays. Well, we have been searching for the perfect day that accommodates all of our schedules for almost a year. During the winter months we tried Fridays, then in the spring it became Hit-or-Miss days, and finally in the summer, it became No-days. Now, thankfully and after much shuffling of schedules and negotiating of terms, we have decided; Mondays are for Mahjong.
Let me back up to last fall, a year ago. In anticipation of the inevitable long winter season, one neighbor texted several of us to ask if we would be interested in taking a beginner’s Mahjong class at Main Line School Night. Three of us were a resounding, quick YES, and so our journey into the recesses of this perplexing game began.
In the beginning we carpooled to the Creutzburg Center, gingerly climbing the steps of the historic building, and then boldly claiming a table of four to ourselves where the instructor, a retired public school French teacher, firmly showed us the way through Bams, Craks, and Dots; Pairs, Pungs, and Kongs; the Charleston (if you know, you just know!); and Flowers, Winds, and Dragons. If it sounds confusing, it IS confusing until you learn the “language” of the game. After five weeks of intense instruction, we actually started to identify the different tiles and began to “play” (I use this term loosely because it took us almost 1.5 hours of supervised play including the Charleston to even crack the surface of beginning a game. Sigh).
*Don’t even get me started on the national Mahjong craze where women play with fancy tiles in fancy rooms designated and designed just for the Mahjong fanatic in your home. These glamorous set-ups are popping up all over social media, so beware! But I digress.*
Through some cajoling, complimenting, and camaraderie, we stuck with it. We have managed to learn the finer nuances of the game and finish a game in under an hour. Progress. Now the four of us bring our revised 2025 Mahjong cards to the table, rack the tactile tiles, and begin the game again…on a Monday, as you would have guessed. Because…
Mondays are for Mahjong,
Jackie
I would like to join you. Where and when are you playing on Monday?
