Hi Neighbor,
It seems the voices of pessimism are louder than those of optimism. Led by the emotional assault of non-stop breaking news showing the worst of humanity, there are also unheralded rays of light waiting to break through to balance this duality. This is especially notable in medical and pharmaceutical research.
Now, because of AI, the pace of potential medical innovation is accelerating exponentially, especially in drug development. But other specialties have potential to make medical treatment more targeted with fewer side effects and most importantly, more effective.
We no longer endure most infections and the pain of surgery due to the discoveries of antibiotics and anesthetics over the past 150 years. Now the pace is accelerating.
There are teams that have the potential to transform medical diagnosis and care in the not-too-distant future. Here are a few that emphasize some unheralded work on behalf of reducing humanity’s suffering:
Robotic surgery, rice-sized pacemakers, personalized drug and lab discoveries and even Apple Watch notifications are transforming the way physical care, disease and aging are viewed. These are the result of primarily anonymous but creative, cross-disciplinary scientific research teams. They share a common dedication to helping others, making life easier, happier, longer.
Take heart.
“This is what the human story is, not the emperors and the generals and their wars, but the nameless actions of people who are never written down, the good they do for others passed on like a blessing…” The Years of Rice and Salt, Kim Stanley Robinson
