There are a lot of great things about living here, but every now and then, something happens that just makes you stop and think—this is why we love this community.
Leon Smith, a teacher at Haverford High School, has been named Teacher of the Year —a huge honor that came out of hundreds of nominations.
Smith has been teaching at Haverford High for more than two decades, covering everything from AP U.S. History to African American Studies. But what stands out isn’t just what he teaches—it’s how he shows up. He’s also coached basketball, advised student groups, and built a reputation as someone students genuinely trust.
Reading about him, you get the sense this isn’t about awards or recognition—it’s about impact.
He’s intentional about creating a classroom where students feel respected, heard, and challenged all at once. That balance is harder than it sounds, and it’s usually what separates a good teacher from the one students remember years later.
Out of hundreds of nominations, he was one of a small group of finalists—and ultimately took the top honor. That’s a big deal. But it also feels like a very local kind of win. The kind that reflects the teachers, schools, and values that make this area what it is.
We talk a lot about restaurants, events, and things to do, but this is the other side of community—the people who shape it in quieter, lasting ways.
Most of us can point to a teacher who made a difference. For lucky students in Haverford, that teacher is Leon Smith.
Bravo Mr Smith!
We were so fortunate that both of our kids had Mr. Smith for 9th grade history and AP US History, and he is always remembered fondly and as a great example of a life-long learner.
