Hi Neighbor!
The last time I went to the Anthony Wayne Theater was a bit dicey. I could feel the springs through my seat cushion, and half of my right armrest was missing. In the lobby, the popcorn was an unnatural shade of yellow, and whatever was coming out of the melted butter dispenser was definitely NOT butter. My kids begged to go to the fancy theaters in King of Prussia, but I had a soft spot for the historic Art Deco venue. It felt like a relative who seemed older and crankier every time you saw her, but you loved her just the same.
Sadly, the theater closed during Covid and never reopened. In 2022, the building’s owner shopped it around to other movie chains with no luck. A Go Fund Me circulated but quickly fizzled. It made me sad every time I drove by.
But there’s hope! A group of local business and arts leaders have an ambitious plan to bring the theater back to life. Led by Todd Scott, founder of Platoon Fitness, the group includes Ishana Night Shyamalan of the famous film family, Sydney Grims of Fearless Restaurants, Main Line School Night Executive Director Rebecca Cain, Gryphon Café owner Rich Mattis and others. After forming the nonprofit Anthony Wayne Theater and formally leasing the space, the group is busy transforming it into an arts and culture hub. Two screens will showcase a mix of blockbuster and art house films, while a third auditorium is earmarked for live events like comedy shows, concerts and speaker series. A revamped concession stand will serve elevated snacks and drinks, including “real” popcorn butter, Scott promises.
Yes, the restoration will take time and some serious cash, but the group is committed to seeing it through. (Scott says donations of any size are welcome!) With any luck the theater will be up and running well before its centennial celebration in July 1928.
Pass the popcorn!
Kate
This is fantastic news! I hope it all works out.
