Hi neighbor!
After giving birth to a second child, Daphna Cardinale of California floated through the next few weeks in a hazy newborn bliss. She and her husband Alexander had spent three long, agonizing years trying to conceive again, eventually turning to IVF for help. Their miracle baby was not only beautiful, but also a champion sleeper and eater. Daphna was over the moon. There was just one problem: their baby did not look a thing like them. With each passing day, Daphna’s husband Alexander grew more concerned that the baby they swaddled, fed and doted on day and night was not their genetic child. Tired of the questions and sense of unease enveloping their household, Daphna ordered a DNA testing kit.
Three weeks later their suspicions were confirmed; the baby they were raising was not related to them. Along with the devastation, a new set of questions emerged: Who were the baby’s genetic parents? Where did they live? And what had the IVF clinic done with Daphna and Alexander’s embryos? Though they weren’t legally required to tell the fertility clinic, the Cardinale’s couldn’t imagine concealing what they knew. After hiring a lawyer and notifying the clinic, Daphna and Alexander learned the clinic had mixed up their embryos with those of another couple. That couple lived just ten miles away and had given birth recently as well, to the Cardinale’s genetic child.
I won’t spoil the rest of the story for you, which you can read or listen to here. I will say that it’s one that will stay with me for a long time, maybe because it’s interlaced with such beautiful and unexpected acts of grace, understanding and love. There are no “winners” here, only two families trying to do the very best for their children and each other with no clear path forward. It’s messy and heartbreaking, but also uplifting.
XOXO,
Kate
