It’s 2021 and I’m sitting on my daughter’s bed in her apartment in Savannah after a long, hot day of moving her into a new place. We’re exhausted, hiding out in the AC, about to watch a movie.
Before we hit play she says, “I’d love some Rita’s.”
I think, me too, but the last thing I want to do is go back outside into 104-degree heat, climb into a 125-degree car, and drive to get water ice.
“Great idea,” I say. “But I’m not leaving this bed.”
“No problem.”
“What do you mean, no problem?”
“We’ll DoorDash it.”
I was genuinely confused. “What do you mean we’ll DoorDash it? Like… they’ll just deliver two cups of Rita’s?”
“Yep.”
I was stunned. In awe. Slightly guilty. I could not believe we were about to have Rita’s delivered to the apartment like royalty.
“What’s next,” I asked. “Starbucks?”
“Uh… yeah.”
Fast forward a few months. My son is home from college and we’re about to watch a movie (we’re big movie watchers).
“Mom, let’s get Handel’s.”
Sounds great. But again… I do not feel like driving or standing in line. Apparently this is becoming a theme in my life.
“No problem,” he says. “We’ll DoorDash it.”
My kids get ice cream delivered. Breakfast delivered. Coffee delivered. Coffee!
This absolutely blows my mind. DoorDash is now a verb. For a generation that may be working and renting forever, it somehow makes about as much sense as paying for bottled water—which, let’s be honest, most of us now do without thinking.
I’m still not totally comfortable DoorDashing anything less than a full meal. I would never order a coffee or a cup of Rita’s to be delivered. I feel a little guilty every time we hit “order.” My husband and I still debate it like it’s a moral decision.
“Should we just go get it?”
“There’s a fee.”
“Plus tip.”
“Plus the food is more expensive.”
“It’s lazy.”
“And all that packaging…”
That said, food delivery does have its upsides. It gives a lot of people flexible jobs. It can boost business for neighborhood restaurants (even if they do pay a cut). And it sometimes nudges us to try places we might not have otherwise.
And if we’re being honest… every once in a while, having ice cream magically appear at your door during a movie night isn’t the worst thing in the world.
Still, I draw the line somewhere.
If you ever hear that I’ve DoorDashed a cup of coffee… please come check on me.
I think its pretty sad to have coffee , and things like water ice delivered. Plus, a breakfast sandwich. I do see the value for someone disabled or elderly – but even there – not coffee .

My son was in the hospital for 4 months straight, recovering from an accident. After three weeks, he went to a step-down unit and from that point he ordered from DoorDash every day, sometimes twice. 3 different hospitals, DoorDashed at every single one. Frequently got his nurses treats, too. Yes, he’s still trying to lose that weight. smh
